About the Procedure
Infant circumcision at Lip Doctor is typically performed between 1 to 6 weeks of age. The procedure is:
- Performed in a dedicated procedure room with sterile technique.
- Accompanied by a local anesthetic (a combination of a sugar solution and topical and injectable anesthetics) to minimize discomfort.
Parents are welcome to be present before and immediately after the procedure, and we provide clear instructions for aftercare and follow-up.

Before the Procedure
During your consultation, Dr. Bector will:
- Review your baby’s health history.
- Perform a brief examination to ensure they are a suitable candidate.
- Explain the procedure, benefits, risks, and answer all your questions.
- Provide pre-procedure instructions, including feeding guidelines.

Aftercare Instructions
Proper aftercare is essential for optimal healing. We will provide you with detailed written and verbal instructions, but here is an overview:
- Healing time: Expect the area to heal within 7–10 days.
- Care routine: Apply petroleum jelly or antibiotic ointment as directed, typically at each diaper change.
- Discomfort: Some mild redness, swelling, or spotting is normal for the first 24–48 hours.
- Diapering: Change diapers frequently to keep the area clean.
- Bathing: Sponge baths are recommended for the first few days.
- Follow-up: We are available for any concerns and will advise if a follow-up is needed.
What to Expect After Circumcision
Most babies are calm and feed well within an hour of the procedure. Mild fussiness is normal and usually resolves with cuddling, feeding, or infant acetaminophen (if recommended by Dr. Bector). We will advise you on what is normal to expect and when to call us if you have concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- At what age is circumcision performed?
We recommend circumcision for babies between 1–6 weeks of age, as this is when the procedure is safest, fastest, and involves the least discomfort. - Is the procedure painful for my baby?
We use a combination of sugar solution, topical anesthetic, and a local nerve block to ensure minimal discomfort. Most babies tolerate the procedure very well and are calm shortly after. - How long does the circumcision procedure take?
The procedure itself takes under 5 minutes, but we schedule extra time for preparation, explanation, and aftercare review. - How do I care for my baby after circumcision?
You will receive detailed instructions, but generally, this involves applying ointment at each diaper change, monitoring for signs of infection, and avoiding tub baths for a few days. - When should I call the clinic after the procedure?
Please contact us if you notice excessive bleeding, severe swelling, persistent crying, fever, or any concerns about healing. We are always available to support you. - Is circumcision covered by insurance or OHIP?
In Ontario, circumcision is generally not covered by OHIP and is considered an elective procedure. We will provide transparent pricing information during your consultation.
